4 Common Interview Mistakes that Can Cost You a Job

$
0
0

It’s a well-known fact that an interview can make or break your chances of getting a job, regardless of how impressive your resume is or how great a fit you believe you are for the job. To have a great interview, there some things or habits (mistakes) you should ensure you avoid to improve your chances of excelling in an interview. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 4 common interview mistakes that can cost you a job.

Oversharing

As much as possible, you should try to remember that you’re speaking to an interviewer not a gist partner. Sometimes, in an attempt to project confidence, an interviewee might become way too chatty, sharing unnecessary details of events he/she has no business talking about in an interview. Be sure to keep your nerves in check and stick to more straight to the point answers. Practicing your approach to interview questions beforehand can go a long way in helping you succeed.

Answering Questions in a Rehearsed Way

At the end of the day, interviewers want to genuinely interact with an interviewee and get some insight into his/her true nature and character. This is difficult to do when the interviewee is almost robotic with responses and mannerisms. Even if you have come across the questions asked before, try as much as possible to be authentic with your answers and to let your personality come through. Smile, loosen up a little and don’t be stiff, regardless of how terribly nervous you might feel.

Not being Smart with Your Mannerisms

Nobody wants a dull, slow or unresponsive person as an employee, as a result interviewers tends to be put off by interviewees that are not smart and quick-witted with their mannerisms. Try as much as you can to avoid talking slowly when answering or asking questions. Project your voice when you speak, avoid sounding dull and speaking in low tones. Make appropriate eye contact (don’t stare down at the interviewer) and also avoid talking too quickly. Ensure you’re audible when you speak and you’re voice projects as much confidence as you can muster, regardless of how nervous you feel.

Giving Uninformed Answers to Questions about the Company

If don’t know something about the company, you should refrain for scrambling to come up with just any answer to the question. Ensure you do your research about the company of course, but if there is something you don’t know, be tactful with how you answer the question. You can offer to share the information you do know or are sure of about the company. Or you can apologize for the oversight, and assure the interviewer you will extend your research and learn the answer to the question asap. This might not totally save you, but it’s much better than giving an uninformed answer. However, you should ensure as much as you can that this never happens and you do your research well enough to answer any question about the company.

“And This Shall Pass”…Dammy Krane’s Family Issue Official Statement.

Family of “Amin” singer, Dammy Krane have come forward to lend a voice over the arrest of their brother in Maimi for Credit Card fraud.

His sister, Elizabeth Adeola Oshodi on behalf of the family have defended him, saying that he is innocent and only a victim of circumstances.

Read the press release below:

As an artiste, promoters book your hotel stays and often buy your destination tickets. It’s never once crossed our hearts as a performing entertainment family, to have to verify that the sources of bookings are legitimate. And please, keep in mind that we’ve been in the industry for almost 15 years. Then came the unfortunate past Friday, when Dammy Krane got arrested trying to board a flight from Maimi to Washington: Maryland. His ticket and hotel bookings were fraudulently purchased by the next show promoter (s). And because of Dammy Krane’s fame, all accusatory hell, broke loose.

We thank God for His goodness and the great spirit of truth. He will have his day in court to clear his name. He will give his personal press release shortly l, however, have decided to speak up against insinuations of fraudulency and grand theft. Dammy is a true gentle and honest citizen of our planet, and remains a good ambassador for not just the music industry, but Nigeria as a whole.

I also will like to seize this rare opportunity to warn all promoters, entertainers, the music industry, the performing arts world & all travel prone individuals to, from now on;

1.) Buy your tickets yourself.

2.) Ensure by prior verification that your ticket and hotel reservations match the purchaser’s info.

How? By declining emergency arrangements that do not give up to 24 to 48 hours to allow you call the airlines and hotels for verifications. Remember to always give the option for promoters or show organizers to buy all bookings and must accompany with the booking profiles: the names used for bookings, and phone numbers must match your designated or named offers, or they will need to send the cash in their verifiable names to your business account.

It hurts so bad that fellow Nigerians will do such a damaging act to another, knowing that the repercussions could be so devastating. We are aware of the implications at hand and pray for your faith in our purity, even as we beg for your patience to let the law take its’ course, before jumping into unfair conclusions. We remain humbly grateful for all the innumerable support and overwhelming show of love to his family.

We thank you.

Elizabeth Adeola Oshodi for Dammy Krane’s family.

5 Things You Do that Make You Tired All the Time

$

Most times we tend to blame being tired all the time on a busy lifestyle and a stressful society, but the truth is we are sometimes more to blame for this constant feeling of tiredness than our busy lifestyles and the stressful society. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 5 things you do that makes you tired all the time.

Not Sleeping Well

Though, sleeping well might not be entirely easy to do if you’re a part of the Nigerian business or corporate world, there are a few things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. Try to limit caffeine intake to small amounts during morning hours and none after that. Turn off all electronic devices at least an hour before bed, especially to avoid exposure to the phone screen light which can interfere significantly with your sleep. Also avoid sugary and carb-heavy meals before bed.

You Don’t Drink Enough Water

Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration. Dehydration, even slight dehydration, takes a toll on energy levels and leads to a reduction in the speed at which oxygen and nutrients reach the muscles and organs. You should pay attention to your water intake and drink enough water to keep your system functioning in great condition.

You’re not consuming enough Iron

Try as much as you can to balance your diet to avoid nutrient deficiencies that can leave you feeling weak, sluggish, irritable and unable to focus. Iron deficiency is one of the major deficiencies that leave you feeling weak and tired all the time. Be sure to stock up on iron rich foods like eggs, dark leafy green vegetables, nuts, kidney beans, foods high in vitamin C etc. to avoid iron deficiencies.

You Practically Live on Junk Food

If your primary diet consists of sugar rich foods and simple carbs, you shouldn’t be surprised you feel tired all the time. These kinds of foods rapidly increase your blood sugar level and constant blood sugar spikes followed by sharp drops causes fatigue over the course of the day. Improve your diet and include lean proteins and whole grains to help keep your blood sugar level steady.

You Stay Up Late on Weekends

Not sleeping on Saturday night, then sleeping through the day on Sunday can make it difficult for you to fall asleep on Sunday night (the night you really need to sleep in preparation for Monday morning). This of course results in a sleep-deprived Monday morning and a potentially crappy week. If you must stay up late on a Saturday night, rather than sleeping through the day on Sunday, you can try waking up close to your normal time on Sunday morning, then taking a power nap in the afternoon to recharge, so that your body will be more responsive to falling asleep come night time.

5 Ways to Defeat Procrastination

$

Procrastination

Procrastination is the action or habit of delaying or postponing something. We are all guilty of this. Quite a number of things may result in the reluctance to perform a task. One of which is a lack of motivation. Regardless, you should know that whether you postpone it or not, no one will do your job for you. This is a reason why you should not procrastinate. But if you are among those who are chronic procrastinators, Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency shares ways you can defeat procrastination.

Do one thing at a time

Large tasks usually appear inundating. You should break down the task into smaller and more manageable pieces. Doing this will make it easier for you to start and conclude your responsibilities.

It does not have to be perfect

You should know that nothing is perfect. With this at the back of your mind, you should simply focus on giving your best and when you are sure you have done so, you can send it to your boss or manager. However, if you wait for it to be perfect, you may never want to do it because your mind will be focused on it being 100%.

Improve Confidence and Self-Belief

You should get rid of your fear about starting a task by being confident that you can do it and you will definitely get the desired result. If the opposite is the case, you will never start because you lack self-belief.

Deadlines

It does not matter if your job requires you to submit your assignment at the deadline. The deadline you set for yourself will inspire you to start. Do not forget to reward yourself when you are done.

Do the Difficult and Important Tasks First

You should always start with the difficult and important jobs first. The harder the tasks are, the more energy and concentration you invest in completing them. You do not want to start them when you are tired. It is, therefore, better to do the hardest and most important tasks first.

Novak Djokovic-Dominic Thiem

Defending champion Novak Djokovic is out of the French Open following a straight-sets defeat by Dominic Thiem.

The Serbian second seed was second best throughout to powerful-hitting Thiem, losing 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 6-0 in Paris. It is the Austrian sixth seed’s first victory over Djokovic and he will now play Rafael Nadal in the last four.

Nadal reached the semis after fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta withdrew from their match with an abdominal injury while trailing 6-2 2-0. Fourth seed Nadal is aiming to win a record 10th title at Roland Garros having become just the fifth man to reach 10 semi-finals at a single Grand Slam in the Open era.

Tournament favourite Nadal, 31, has won the French Open title on each of the nine previous occasions he has advanced past the quarter-finals. He has now recorded 100 best-of-five-sets victories on clay from just 102 matches, with his only defeats coming at Roland Garros, to Robin Soderling in the fourth round in 2009 and Djokovic in the 2015 quarter-finals.

Nadal has also dropped just 22 games through five matches in Paris, bettering his previous low of 25 en route to the last four in 2008.

Paul Sylvester: When Creativity meets with Competency

Paul Sylvester

In our world today where political, religious and ethnic differences have grown so profound, and become so nasty, that we’ve lost sight of the things that matter. At this point, commendation will always set in when we run into competence and very creative civil servants like Comrade Emmanuel Eka of Akwa Ibom State Council for Art and Culture.

Comrade Eka as the Head of Fine and Applied Arts department, has not only transformed the department but the entire council through his numerous activities like the recently concluded International Children’s Day Celebration, where over ten schools participated. An event were visitors used that time to tour the exhibition stand. Truth be told, so many of them were amazed with what they saw which were all made in Akwa Ibom state council for Art and Culture.

Suffice it to say that in an African society like Akwa Ibom State, the place of fine art is quit symbolic with regards to preservation of cultural heritage. That said, it is equally distinctive to see an Akwa Ibom son shine in the area of fine art and Eka in this light, deserve great commendation for his kind of creativity being brought to bare.

Just like the historical Prof. Stella Idiong of blessed memory, a proud daughter of Akwa Ibom who broke record as the first female professor of art in Nigeria whom comrade Eka has drawn inspiration from. This is one man whose art works depict the height of innovation, beauty of the profession and passion for distinction. It is him who in less than two years in office, has redefined the essence of arts and crafts in the preservation of history. Again, Comrade Eka is another symbol of the ‘dakkada’ philosophy.

Lest we forget, while it is worthy to give commendation to who deserves, Eka in all sense, should not be excluded from the chart of distinctively performing public servants in this clime.

Fair enough, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism under the able watch of the honourable commissioner, Mr Victor Antai,  is organizing an art and culture festival tagged ‘Usoro Uso’, which on the long run will not only promote gifted hands like Comrade Eka,  but will discover great talents in the state. This also should be applauded. All in all, Akwa Ibom will rise again even as more ‘Ekas’ spring.

Comrade Eka can be reached with 07039650464. God bless Akwa Ibom State!

Anthony-Joshua-vs-Wladimir Klitschko rematch

Anthony Joshua has been granted an exception by the IBF to fight Wladimir Klitschko for their heavyweight title, but the bout must take place before December 2.

Joshua’s promoters Matchroom Boxing requested the special extension and it was approved by the IBF at their convention.

The governing body has ruled that the winner of any potential rematch between Joshua and Klitschko must then face No 1 contender Kubrat Pulev in a title defence.

The IBF have also stipulated there will be no further exceptions or unification fights beyond December 2.

Pulev had objected to the exception being made but has accepted the condition that he will receive his shot at the IBF world champion after the rematch.

A number of venues are being considered to stage the second meeting of Joshua and Klitschko, who contested an excellent fight at a sold-out Wembley Stadium in April.

“We’ve had so many offers – Nigeria, Dubai, America, and also we have the opportunity of Cardiff here in the UK,” promoter Eddie Hearn said after the IBF decision.

NAFDAC GMO Products

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has not licensed any Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) based products in the country, reports The Sun.

The NAFDAC spokesperson, Dr. Abubakar Jimoh, made this known, on Thursday, in Abuja, while reacting on speculation that GMO products have flooded some markets in Nigeria.

Jimoh explained that the agency had not given any approval for GMO foods in the country.

He said that if any was found in any departmental store or supermarket, such was selling illegally without the consent of NAFDAC.

According to him, the Federal Government has created a new agency to regulate GMO based products and the organisation had visited NAFDAC to seek for cooperation.

“Hope you are aware that government created an agency recently purposely to regulate GMOs and the agency met with us.

“We asked them to be on the driver’s seat while we work with them, and they told us that they also had not given any approval for GMO products.

“Anybody that has any evidence on the presence of GMO based products in the country should report to NAFDAC,” he said.

Sampson Malachy: The Paris Accord is bigger than Donald Trump and his Idiosyncrasies

$

Donald Trump

After weeks of waffling and reality show–style of intrigue and suspense, created by President Donald Trump over his eccentric decision to pull-out of the Paris Agreement, Trump took the world by storm on this.

I have been in deep pensive mood (sad and slightly depressed) after the news broke that the United State of America will be backing-out of the Paris agreement. With wild bewilderment, I watched on CNN as President Trump with daunted clairvoyant confidence made this unimagined announcement and I saw some people clapping their hands with joy raining in their heart.

I respect Trump for always being blunt and decisive, but he got it all wrong here: “This agreement is less about the climate and more about other countries gaining a financial advantage over the United States,” – Donald Trump.

Of course, none of this is true.

Climate-change is not of any sort a science fiction written to win the noble prize it is either an UFO (unidentified flying objects) flying across the white house.

Climate change is real. It ember cuts across the current Melting ice and a warming ocean mean more water and a rising sea level. Though the global sea level is also affected by short-term climate phenomena and geographic factors, it is closely linked to temperature. Sea levels rose consistently throughout the 20th century, leaving coastal regions more vulnerable to flooding, storm surges, and salt water seeping into freshwater aquifers and affecting plant and animal habitats.

What Is The Paris Accord?

It is an grand agreement where countries agreed with one voice to sign on to be a part of the pact agreed to limit the century’s global average temperature increase to no more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above the levels from the years 1850-1900 (the pre-industrial era). The agreement also states a more rigid goal of limiting temperature increases to only 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial era levels.

Responsibility and Terms

Participating nations made a historic pact on Dec. 12, 2015, in Paris, France, to adopt green energy sources, cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and limit the rise of global temperatures (as mentioned in the overall mission).

Under the agreement, every country has an individual plan (or “Nationally Determined Contributions”) to tackle its greenhouse gas emissions.

For example, under the Obama administration, the country vowed to cut its emissions by 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels by the year 2025.

The U.S. also pledged $3 billion to the Green Climate Fund which helps developing countries adapt and mitigate practices to fight climate change. The overall agreement asks developed countries to provide $100 billion to the fund.

How Many Nations Are Part Of The Accord?

As of May 2017, of the 196 negotiating countries that signed the agreement, 147 parties have ratified it.

One hundred and ninety-six nations committed to the climate deal in 2015 and the nations had a deadline of April 21, 2017, to make it official.

Syria and Nicaragua were the only two countries that did not initially agree to the pact. It is saddening to see the United States joins that list

According to The Independent, the Russian government said it fully supports the agreement, but added its goals would be less effective without the participation of major countries.

How Would U.S. Withdrawal Affect The Country And Global Efforts Against Climate Change?

According to the New York Times, a U.S. withdrawal could “seriously weaken global efforts to avoid drastic climate change.”

Instead of cutting emissions to 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025 (the nation’s original pledge under the Obama administration), an analysis by Rhodium Group estimated that emissions would fall just 15 to 19 percent below 2005 levels.

“President Trump’s decision to quit the Paris Agreement and slash US funding for the GREEN CLIMATE FUND weakens the already frayed bonds of trust between developed and developing countries. It places an enormous burden on other industrialized countries to mobilize the $100 billion per year promised to support climate action in developing countries. We call on countries, states, investors and businesses around the world to mobilize investment in the green economy and create a sustainable future for all’’ – GRO HARLEM BRUNDTLAND, former UN Special Envoy on Climate Change.

Why Did Syria And Nicaragua Back Out?

Syria and Nicaragua were not part of the agreement in the first place. It certainly isn’t because they don’t believe climate change is occurring or are not affected by it.

In the case of Nicaragua, the argument actually went the other way. As world leaders gathered in the French capital in November 2015 to reach an agreement on fighting climate change, Nicaragua’s lead envoy explained to reporters that the country would not support the agreed-upon plan as it hinged on voluntary pledges and would not punish those who failed to meet them. That was simply not enough, Paul Oquist argued:

“We don’t want to be an accomplice to taking the world to 3 to 4 degrees and the death and destruction that represents.”

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, said rich countries should pay more for climate change, as they were historically responsible for causing more damage to the environment and developing nations such as his own would be the worst hit.

Syria, on the other hand, was effectively an international pariah when the Paris accord was first signed, making Damascus’s involvement at the least impractical. (Members of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government remain subject to both European and American sanctions, making it nearly impossible for them to travel unless two friendly countries such as Russia and Iran.)

Why will the US belong to this category?

Trump’s misdeed

Mary Robinson, Elder and former UN Special Envoy on Climate Change, said:

“The US reneging on its commitment to the Paris Agreement renders it a rogue state on the international stage. But the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement will not stop climate action in the United States. At state level, in cities, in businesses and communities around the country the move away from fossil fuels is well underway.

We encourage all actors in the US working to tackle climate change to stand their ground, share the benefits of their work and to keep making their voices heard.”

Truth is: Loony notions won’t stop the ripple-effect of global warning on the globe even in the United States of America, unless she is now a country in Mars.

Every leader anywhere in the world has a record which contains deeds and misdeeds of the leader in question and for me, this shrift decision won’t be forgotten in a hurry.

Viewed from whatever standpoint, what is wrong is wrong!

Ab Isong Bobby Bassey

Shortly after one of Uyo’s popular socialite, Bobby Bassey went on his knees to propose to his fiancée, an act which got the Uyo Facebook community in a big surprise, award winning gospel music icon and lead pastor at The Citadel, Ab Isong penned down 25 heart-touching advices Bobby who he holds dear and considers to him as a son.

Below is what he wrote exclusive to Hypestation:

Bobby had been my son for over 10 if not 15 years now. He first met me when I went preaching in their school (Science School Ndon Eyo, Onna).

When he graduated, he became my ardent follower and has been consistent till date. A son I am proud of. There was a certain period we lost touch, but on getting to meet my wife, here was bobby again serving in that church and submitting to my wife as his mum, re-ignited the fire and he became our first son.

Mummy has been whispering to me about a certain Glory Elijah but as a father, I had to do gragra because I’ll not love to see my son play games with an innocent heart.

But now that you have followed my footsteps, I’m proud of you son. Marrying early is so sweet son, And marrying your friend is the best thing that can ever happen to a man.

Thanks for honouring mum by choosing to engage her on her day. On this note, I’ll love to give you both sincere advice from my heart.

When your mum, Emem Isong and I got married Seven years ago, we were young and in love, but we were also pretty clueless (me especially)! Along the way, we’ve had so many people share wise advice and life experiences with us which has helped guide our family through good times and hard times. Through the years, I’ve been collecting some of the best marriage advice others have shared with us (and some I had to learn through my own mistakes).

If you’ll apply these twenty-five principles below to your relationship, it could make a life-changing difference in your marriage!

  1. Choose to love each other even in those moments when you struggle to like each other. Love is a commitment, not a feeling.
  2. Always answer the phone when your spouse is calling and when possible, try to keep your phone off when you’re together with your spouse. (She is worth your undivided attention).
  3. Make time together a priority. Budget for a consistent date night. Time is the “currency of relationships” so consistently invest time into your relationship/marriage.
  4. Surround yourself with friends who will strengthen your marriage and remove yourself from people who may tempt you to compromise your character.
  5. Make laughter the soundtrack of your marriage. Share moments of joy, and even in the hard times, find reasons to laugh.
  6. In every argument, remember that there won’t be a “winner” and a “loser.” You are partners in everything so you’ll either win together or lose together. Work together to find a solution.
  7. Remember that a strong marriage rarely has two strong people at the same time. It’s usually a husband and wife taking turns being strong for each other in the moments when the other feels weak.
  8. Prioritize what happens in the bedroom. It takes more than sex to build a strong marriage, but it’s nearly impossible to build a strong marriage without it!
  9. Remember that marriage isn’t 50-50, divorce is 50-50. Marriage has to be 100-100. It’s not splitting everything in half, but both partners giving everything they’ve got!
  10. Give your best to each other, not your leftovers after you’ve given your best to everyone else.
  11. Learn from other people, but don’t feel the need to compare your life or your marriage to anyone else’s. God’s plan for your life is masterfully unique!
  12. Don’t put your marriage on hold while you’re raising your kids or else you’ll end up with an empty nest and an empty marriage.
  13. Never keep secrets from each other. Secrecy is the enemy of intimacy.
  14. Never lie to each other. Lies break trust and trust is the foundation of a strong marriage.
  15. When you’ve made a mistake, admit it and humbly seek forgiveness. You should be quick to say, “I was wrong. I’m sorry. Please forgive me.”
  16. When your husband/wife breaks your trust, give them your forgiveness instantly which will promote healing and create the opportunity for trust to be rebuilt. You should be quick to say, “I love you. I forgive you. Let’s move forward.”
  17. Be patient with each other. Your spouse is always more important than your schedule.
  18. Model the kind of marriage that will make your sons want to grow up to be good husbands and your daughters want to grow up to be good wives.
  19. Be your spouse’s biggest encourager, not his/her biggest critic. Be the one who wipes away their tears, not the one who causes them.
  20. Never talk badly about your spouse to other people or vent about them online. Protect your spouse at all times and in all places.
  21. Always wear your wedding ring. It will remind you that you’re always connected to your spouse and it will remind the rest of the world that you’re off limits!
  22. Connect into a community of faith. A good church can make a world of difference in your marriage and family.
  23. Pray together. Every marriage is stronger with God in the middle of it.
  24. When you have to choose between saying nothing or saying something mean to your spouse, say nothing every time!
  25. Never consider divorce as an option. Remember that a “perfect marriage” is just two imperfect people who refuse to give up on each other!

Those principles have and is keeping us.

I pray that very soon you’ll step up and upgrade this engagement to a full-blown marriage.

Count on us as you make the next big move.

God bless you both.

Chewing Gum

Some of us cannot do without chewing gum daily.  This is because the flavour or mint of the gum help masks or prevent mouth odour. While there are positive benefits of chewing gum, there are also downsides you should never ignore. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency shares some of these downsides.

It makes you hungry

Chewing gum can activate your hunger pangs. Thus increasing your cravings for food. So, if you do not want to get hungry, do not eat gum immediately after consuming mama put. This can also help put your weight in check.

Tooth damage

If the gum you chew contains sugar, you are exposing yourself to tooth decay. It makes no difference if it is a sugar-free gum, there are still risks to your teeth. This is because sugar-free gum has acidic flavours and preservatives that may lead to tooth damage.

Excess strain on your jaw

Chewing gum can cause jaw muscle imbalance especially if you chew on one side more than the other. To prevent this jaw strain or pain, you should chew on both sides.

Causes headaches

Young individuals who chew gum are more susceptible to headaches and severe migraines. This is due to the fact that you suffer from jaw strain and this can cause headaches.

Artificial sweeteners are linked to cancer

Like earlier said, it makes no difference whether your gum contains sugar or not. This is because sugar-free gum has artificial sweeteners which are usually used to replace sugar. The most common one is aspartame which is a harmful ingredient that has been linked to cancers, brain tumours, weight gain and birth defects.

It can result in farting

Chewing gum allows too much air into your body. This can result in bloating which is why you fart very often.
