The Archbishop of Bafia, Cameroon, Mgr Jean Marie Benoît Balla has taken his own life by jumping into the Sanaga River around the Ebebda Bridge in Cameroon.
A search for the clergyman was launched by the Catholic community after his Land Cruiser SUV was found on the Ebebda bridge Wednesday afternoon- about 90km from Yaounde, reports PUNCH.
After a search of the vehicle was carried out, revealing his ID card, driver’s license and car documents. More so, a handwritten note on the letter head of the diocese simply read “Je suis dans l’eau”, which translated into English as “I am in the water” was also found in the car, local news website, cameroon-info.net reported.

The Divisional Officer, D.O, of Ebebda, told journalists that a Reverend Father informed him about the incident at about 1pm.
“I immediately ran to the scene and saw for myself. The car is truly here on the bridge and the note the Bishop left suggests he jumped into the river”, said the DO. He also said no damage had been done to the car which indicates there was no violence.

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Usani Uguru, on Wednesday disclosed that the Federal Government has uncovered some shady deals by some of the contractors that handled projects in the Niger Delta region.

Uguru disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said the discoveries were contained in a report of an investigation carried out by the ministry on all contracts awarded and projects carried out by the ministry from 2009 to 2015, periods late Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan were the Presidents of the country.

“Some of the contractors made away with the money paid them without appearing on the sites of the projects, some others managed to implement 12 per cent of the projects they were paid for, he added.

The minister said the report revealed that over N423bn had been expended in the region by the ministry alone, adding that the amount did not include the sums expended by other intervention agencies.

The minister said he sought and got the council’s approval to make the report available to relevant government agencies in charge of recovering government assets that were either misappropriated, misused or found to be idling in some quarters.

He said while those who deserved sanctions would be punished, others who needed to return to sites would be compelled to do so.

Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan, on Thursday said that the Federal Government will establish special schools for women who abandoned school to get married, reports Premium Times.

“All women that married at early age will have the opportunity to continue with their education from their husbands houses.

“The schools will be in two categories so as to avoid problems emanating from the establishment of the schools.

“The first category is for those who started their schooling but due to one reason or the other dropped out.

“The other category is for the Adult Literacy classes that will be established in all local governments to assist women attain certain literacy level.

“In the Adult literacy schools, the women will also be empowered with skills training during their lessons.

“The women will be trained how to make soap, local soft drink, candle, pomade, cake, local hair dressing, tailoring and other small businesses.”

While addressing newsmen in Katsina, the minister also appealed to religious and traditional leaders to continue supporting ongoing efforts to boost the enrolment of the girl-child into schools nationwide, adding that the education of female children was very important as such the leaders should encourage parents to send them to school.

Darren Fletcher will join Stoke when his West Brom contract ends this summer. Fletcher has signed a two-year deal to begin at the start of July, ending a 29-month spell at The Hawthorns.

The Scotland midfielder, who is due to take on England in next week’s World Cup Qualifier, becomes Mark Hughes‘ first signing of the summer.

Fletcher suffered health problems in his final few years at Manchester United but did not miss a single Premier League game for Albion after joining in February 2015.

Stoke manager Hughes said:  “He has shown over the past two seasons that his qualities and appetite for the game haven’t diminished in any way, and I believe that his experience and leadership qualities will significantly enhance us.”

Yaya Toure has signed a new one-year deal with Manchester City which keeps him at the club for an eighth season.

Toure, whose previous contract was due to expire this summer, has agreed to spend an eighth season at the Etihad Stadium.

The four-time African Footballer of the Year was frozen out of the first-team squad early in the season after a row between his agent and City boss Pep Guardiola, but he returned to the side in November and finished with seven goals from 31 appearances.

Toure’s arrival from Barcelona in 2010 kick-started an era of success for Sheikh Mansour‘s City which has so far yielded five major domestic trophies, including the Premier League title in 2012 and 2014.

Toure’s new deal is the latest piece of early summer business at City, who have already signed Bernardo Silva from Monaco and are closing on a record deal for Benfica goalkeeper Ederson.

A move for another Monaco player, full-back Benjamin Mendy, is also close while Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk is a big-money target.

Guardiola’s summer overhaul, on the back of his first trophyless season as a manager, has also seen Jesus Navas, Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy, Pablo Zabaleta and Willy Caballero leave the club.

Opening the score line was Leicester City’s Ahmed Musa in the 3rd minute, later making it a brace in the 17th, with both assists coming from Alex Iwobi.

Ten minutes later as team Nigeria continued to their dominance, with Kelechi Iheanacho found the net with an assist from Ogehenekaro Etebo.

Gernot Rohr’s squad will later meet South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on June 8 for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo.

The manager of Akwa Ibom’s first and finest female Disk Jockey, DJ Ritzy, has cleared the air about news making the rounds within the entertainment circle that there is a relationship going on between him and DJ Ritzy.

The response to the speculation was necessary by DJ Ritzy’s manager, Nelson NseAbasi, having been brought up on several occasions and most recently by a blogger in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.

Nelson moves to clear the doubts of the rumour mongers by saying yes, there is a relationship between him and DJ Ritzy, but it’s nothing but a working relationship as business partners, which has grown to become a brother and sister relationship.

In his words ‘I am not deterred , I have a conviction that the brand DJ Ritzy will go global, that has been our goal ever since we met, as we speak, she is already eyeing the international stage and we are not relenting, we have the blessings of her parent, that means the sky is just a starting point’.

Speaking further, Nelson said he had received several threats from interested suitors who feel he is overprotecting the black and beautiful DJ.

Nelson and DJ Ritzy started working in 2015, since then, it has been a testimony for DJ Ritzy who has grown to become a brand to reckon with in Akwa Ibom state and South-South Nigeria, winning awards and playing big shows.

Not fewer than 21 lives have been lost in two separate Boko Haram attacks in villages near Chibok, Borno State between Sunday and Wednesday, reports PUNCH.

According to a resident of the area, Hassan said the insurgents first struck at Kaya, a village 27 km from Chibok, causing residents to desert their homes.

He said, “There is no single soul remaining there (Kaya). The Boko Haram members came in the evening with their motorcycles, bicycles and started firing at everyone in sight.

“They burnt many houses. Those who were fortunate ran away, but those who couldn’t escape were attacked. All the villagers have moved out of the village.

“People did not hear about the killings because the village is not accessible. It is located inside the bush.”

Hassan said two days after the incident, the attackers returned to a village close to Gumsri, a Borno community, where 14 persons were allegedly killed.

“Within two days, they returned and attacked the next village close to Gumsri which acts as a sort of roadblock between us and Boko Haram.

“As it is, all the villagers in those communities have ran away, they have packed their belongings and come to Chibok. So many attacks and innocent lives have been lost in Damboa LGA but it is usually not reported.

“For us in Chibok, we are living in fear because that it is the only place that has been a roadblock against them. Some people that cannot withstand the situation are even moving to Maiduguri which is safer for them,” he added.

On whether there are no soldiers on the ground during the attacks, he said the soldiers around found it difficult to get to the place of the attacks “because of the far distance from where they are to the village.”

“Even with the presence of a brigade, the problem the security people face here is that mostly, the communities attacked are under Damboa council but the soldiers are closer to Chibok,” he added.

Officers of the Nigerian Navy has arrested five oil thieves in the Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state.

This was made known to reporters by The Commander, NNS Jubilee, Commodore Saidu Garba, during a handing over of the suspects to the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

“Men of the command, during a routine patrol intercepted two canoes and arrested the suspects with 11, 250 litres of Automobile Gas Oil (AGO).

“The arrest followed intensive patrol of the maritime environment, following intelligence information on the activities of oil thieves in the area,” Graba said.

“The command admonishes oil thieves and other criminal elements operating within the maritime environment to refrain from such acts or face unpleasant consequences, as there will be no hiding place for criminals in the state.”

He further stated that the suspects had confessed to conveying the products from Bonny in Rivers to Akwa Ibom.

In response to this feat by the Navy, the Akwa Ibom NSCDC Commandant, Mrs Obiagelu Obiagulu, commended the Commander, officers and men of NNS Jubilee for their complementary role in fighting criminality within its maritime environment.

Real Madrid took the lead of the game when Cristiano Ronaldo registered the first goal in the 20th minute, with Juventus levelling the scoreline in the 27th minute with a volley inside the area by Mandzukic.

But Real Madrid took control of the game after the interval, with Brazilian midfielder Casemiro’s deflected shot restoring the lead.

Ronaldo then sealed victory for after poking home from close range following Luka Modric’s cross. Asensio scored the 4th and final goal in the 90th minute of the match after Marcelo’s fine pass.

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has now won back-to-back Champions League titles since he took charge in January 2016.

Juventus, who are champions in the Serie A have now lost five UEFA Champions League finals since they last won the competition in 1996.

Former Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote has died aged 30 after collapsing during training in China, BBC reports.

In his seven years at United the Ivory Coast player made over 150 appearances, including three last season. He joined Chinese second-tier side Beijing Enterprises from Newcastle in February.

Born in the Ivory Coast, Tiote was part of the Ivorian squad that won the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. He began his professional career in Belgium with Anderlecht in 2005 before moving to Dutch side FC Twente, where he made 86 appearances and won the Eredivisie league title in the 2009-10 season under manager Steve McClaren.

Tiote, a defensive midfielder, then signed for Newcastle in 2010 for £3.5m. In February 2011, he scored a memorable goal as Newcastle United came back from 4-0 down to draw with Arsenal in the Premier League. He joined Beijing Enterprises Group FC for an undisclosed fee in February 2017.
