4 Possible Ways Technology Can Drive Nigeria’s Economy out of Recession

aso-rock-dem-day-hypetationng

As the price of oil continues to nosedive globally and the Nigerian economy is in recession, this has resulted to cutting in government expenditure and the loss of jobs.

But an interesting thing that is happening in this recession is that sectors that have been ignored for years are being given attention by the Nigerian government. One of such industries is the Nigerian tech space.

Technology in Nigeria has continued to grow since the turn of the decade. Today, there are hundreds of tech start-ups, tech ecosystem and incubation hubs making a significant contribution to the Nigerian economy. This is long before the crash of oil prices.

The biggest recognition offered to the Nigerian tech space so far is the visit of Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook. This even makes it important to note that it is possible for technology to drive Nigeria out of the current economic recession. Jumia Travel, Africa’s No 1 hotel booking portal shares 4 possible ways technology can drive Nigeria’s economy out of recession.

Partnership with incubation Hubs

Incubation hubs are dotted all over Nigeria including Lagos. In fact, Yaba has been tagged as the country’s Silicon Valley because of the presence of many tech start-ups, incubation hubs and e-commerce businesses. Leading the incubation hub pack is Co-Creation hub (CC Hub). These incubation hubs are already working with start-ups and a public-private partnership with them will go a long way.

Support tech Start-ups

The government is already doing this as it recently organized a technology Demo day where 30 selected start-ups showcased their businesses and ideas in Abuja. If more of these events are organized, it will provide much-needed funds for these start-ups.

Tax breaks for e-commerce businesses

Technology has a huge impact on the e-commerce industry. They employ thousands of Nigerians. While concerted efforts are being made to prevent job losses, e-commerce businesses are groaning due to the recession and lack of infrastructure. But, if these e-commerce businesses are granted tax breaks, there will be a decline in job losses and more people will even be employed.

Take advantage of Angel Investors

Facebook invested over $24 million in Andela in Nigeria. Andela is a tech hub where future tech engineers are trained. There are many bigger tech companies and angel investors with blank checks looking to invest in these tech start-ups. Of course, since technology is not based on oil, it will attract more investors. Hence, tech start-ups can take advantage of them.

5 Likely Reasons Not to Worry If You Forget Your Phone at Home

Shouldn't have painted the town red last night

It is quite unthinkable for you to leave your phone at home. It is the 21st century and the era of the technology evolution where a phone is as important as the air you breath in. You can make and receive calls, access the internet and do a plethora of things with your phone. Despite this, you may inadvertently leave your phone at home. It is difficult but if it happens, Jumia Travel, Africa’s No 1 hotel booking portal share 5 reasons not worry too much if you leave your phone at home.

No distractions

While driving, working or exercising, your phone can be a major distraction. It may ring, constantly receive social media or text notifications. And of course, you may want to catch-up with trending news on social media and your favourite website. But without your phone, you will be able to concentrate and focus.

You will be able to connect with people

For many people, phones take most of their attention. They don’t listen when they are communicating and very few people visit friends when they can simply chat. If for a day you leave your phone at home, you will no doubt have quality conversations, especially with friends and co-workers.

Enjoy your vacation

A break from work can easily be ended by a phone call. This is why some employees go incommunicado when they are on leave or vacation. So, be grateful if you forget or leave your phone at home. It is no cause for anxiety.

Peace and quiet

Phones ringing, listening to music via Bluetooth headphones and a temporary break from social media. These are the things you enjoy when you are with your phone. A day without your phone will help you experience peace and quiet of your ambience and observe what is happening around you.

You will save money on call cards

Forgetting your phone may be another way to save money in this economic recession. If you calculate the cash you spend on call cards, you will be glad you forgot your phone even though it can be very inconvenient for you.

Nelson NseAbasi

All is set to roll out the drums on 15th September 2016, as Lady Mina Horsfall will be a year older.

The former beauty queen and multiple award winning actress has been a toast of pageant organisers in recent time, owing to her experience as a queen, and her determination to see to it that young Nigerian women, especially of Niger Delta origin, put their talent to use in making the society a better place for all, this she does exuding so much passion and energy.

Experienced in Beauty Pageantry & Nollywood, Lady Mina is widely traveled; from Ghana to England, from USA to faraway China, she belongs to that small category of people who are living their dream, doing what she always wanted to do, as a beauty pageant consultant, an entertainment entrepreneur, and a business owner currently based in Abuja.

The Kalabari born chic sometimes feels she is superhuman, and despite all the energy she puts into work, she still finds time to relax and have serious fun, either alone or with family and/or friends.

On her birthday in 2015, she found herself in Lagos, away from her Port Harcourt base, and even though she tried to keep it low by visiting the less privilege at a home in Lekki, her buddies threw her a surprise party at a cozy spot on Victoria Island.

This year, family, friends and professional colleagues have already started sending her good wishes from across borders, owing to her benevolent nature in her dealings with peiple who cross her path.

#HBDMinaHorsfall…continue to age gracefully and happily.

By Nelson NseAbasi

Akwa Ibom State Government has promised an enabling environment for Technology Developers & Innovators in the state. The pronouncement was made by the Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on ICT, Engineer Solomon Eyo while addressing guests at the first ever Nigeria Incubators and Innovators hosted in Uyo by Start Innovation Hub.
Start Innovation Hub on Wednesday 14th September, 2016 played host to Network of Incubators In Nigeria (NIINE) for an ecosystem development programme.

NINE is on a nationwide tour starting from Start Innovation Hub in Uyo, to meet and interact with developers and entrepreneurs in the ecosystem. The essence of this visit was to discuss the various ways to develop the ecosystem and promote local contents.

The CEO of Start Innovation Hub Mr. Hanson Johnson in his opening remark gave a rundown of the event highlight, promising that there will be no coding, just addressing challenges and discussing solutions.

According to the leader of the team Mr. Bankole Toba, who shared inspiring stories from various Start Ups in cities across the country, he said the performance of practitioners in the state is needed to attract the necessary attention of government and private sector investors.

The Governors aide reinstated the interest the current administration has in ensuring that Akwa Ibom youth catch in on the opportunities Information Communication Technology offers, adding that Governor Udom Emmanuel has displayed his good intentions for the sector by sending 1,000 youths for Oracle Database Training.

The Engineer and ICT expert admonished tech heads in the state to continue in their good works, encouraging them to rise to the faith of greatness in line with the Dakkada spirit, setting example with Ime Archibong, an Akwa Ibom son who is the right hand man of Mark Zuckerberg. He announced his accessibility to all technology gurus with noble ideas, to analyze and access tech opportunities in the state, like the citing of the Coconut Refinery, which will require innovations and technical assistance from technology gurus to develop applications needed to run the refinery.

Also present was the Governor’s aide on New Media, Mrs. Meflyn Anwana who reiterated the Governors understanding of the changes in the way human beings communicate all over the world, and the essence of the new media, which is why he has for the first time in the history of the state appointed an aide to oversee that office, and communicate with the citizenry through the medium. She promised to work hand in hand with Start Ups who are willing to deploy best practices as found in the global community.

Akwa Ibom Education gets Intervention with ‘Teachers Volunteer Scheme’ (TVS)

teachers-volunteer-scheme-tvs-hypestationng

In 2014, it was stated by UNESCO that the world needed 4 million more teachers to get every child in a classroom. That’s according to a 2014 report from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which details the acute global teacher shortage currently taking place in 93 countries. If these countries were to achieve universal primary education over the next few years, they would need to hire millions more teachers, UNESCO found. The teacher shortage is most extreme in sub-saharan Africa, where over 70 percent of countries currently need more teachers. As it stands, schools in the region suffer from overcrowding and a severe lack of resources or building maintenance. Here is a statistic from Akwa Ibom.

It’s 2016 and with the growing population in Africa and the strength of a touch of recession in Nigeria one is only left at an imagination at what could be going on within the walls of the classrooms, especially in smaller states like Akwa Ibom. The challenge to create a working education system in Africa is a feat everyone should key into otherwise elites will be in extinction by 2026. The statistics are not only alarming but heart breaking. This is not a case of “Feed Africa” and the impoverished children’s pictures we share round social media depicting physical hunger, this is a mental hunger which isn’t only ulceric but cancerous and is not only spreading really fast but is shutting down systems, structures and economies.

With the world moving into the fourth industrial revolution and the Internet nation, many Africans will be left behind or at the mercy of crime and social ill for development as the citadels of intelligence are decaying before our eyes while the stench of the intellectual decay is ridding the economy of growth and progression. While the youth decry the lack of jobs, employers are raising “unemployability” campaigns showcasing a deeper challenge “the lack of employable people”. Where is the place of the average child and children who populate our education systems thirsty for knowledge and information to save the world, yet receiving next to nothing to save themselves?

In the face of the heated and harsh reality, a group of volunteers in the Akwa Ibom community are providing local and effective solutions to a global challenge through the The Akwa Ibom Teachers’ Volunteer Scheme (TVS). TVS is a timely intervention to improve the quality of Education in Akwa Ibom State, by recruiting, intensively training volunteer teachers in critical subject areas and deploying them to address existing vacant positions in public schools in the State. It will also serve as a platform for empowerment, to complement current effort of Government at reducing unemployment in the state.

The TVS will provide person-to-person, teacher and student exchanges, quality educational opportunity for the less privileged. This set of volunteer teachers thus endowed with requisite experience will serve as a reservoir or “go to market” for future recruitment by the public or private sector. The TVS and its iVolunteer programs are centred on the conviction that the citizens can be central to providing solutions to challenges in their communities as a means of support to government’s resolute effort.

Volunteer at a school today and save your generation from intellectual extinction tomorrow, you can save this generation by being a part of the solution.

TVS an initiative powered by Veltio; an Education Management and Human Resource Development Organization.

The project will be publicly unveiled on Friday, September 16, 2016 at Ibom Hall at 10am and has invited all education stakeholders, Akwa Ibom people and the general public to the occasion.

Akwa Ibom may Sink If We Don’t Stop Building on Drains and Natural Waterways

stainerz-property-hypestationng

The MD/CEO of Stainerz Properties Ltd Architect Chris Umoren has warned of an impending disaster waiting to happen in Akwa Ibom due to the effect of land misuse. In a chat with our reporter over the weekend in Uyo, Architect Chris Umoren said people misuse land by having activities in areas where naturally by simple urban development laws, they shouldn’t be doing so. “People now build on drains, and on natural pathway of water thus, they block the paths that water should naturally flow, and of course with such blockade, water must naturally find its way, and when that happens, it comes with a lot of destruction.”, he said.

He also added that Akwa Ibomites should pay serious attention to this issue as it is in a near-critical stage. He said “Today, even with a little downpour, our streets and houses are flooded and we are quick to apportion blames on the government, without knowing that we are the cause of that situation.”

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Akwa Ibom State has launched an initiative code named “Our Health Our Wealth” to intervene and meet the immediate health needs of the Akwa Ibom citizenry. Our Health Our Wealth initiative is based on six pillars namely: Doctors Volunteer Scheme; Medical / Surgical outreaches and medical revivals; Deworming and Nutrition; Viral Hemorrhagic Fever awareness campaigns; prostrate disease awareness campaigns and infertility awareness campaigns. The initiative was launched at NMA house Uyo by Dr Valerie Obot, permanent secretary ministry of Housing and urban renewal . The state NMA chairman Dr Aniekeme Uwah while swearing in the state executive council noted that in just forty five days , his administration had worked assiduously to meet the aims and objectives of the association which covers the yearnings and aspirations of doctors in the state.

A key note address on the topic ” The Role Of The State Executive Council in the leadership of NMA ” was delivered by Dr Osahon Enabulele, Past National President of NMA and Vice President (West Africa) Common Wealth Medical Association .

Dr Enabulele in his presentation said it was the duty of the state executive council to take policy decisions and resolutions for state branches of NMA instead of just responding and concurring to that of the Ministry of health. He pointed out the SEC was the governing organ of the NMA which should provide oversight functions within and beyond the profession which may include making declarations, resolutions and amendment of bye laws to enhance medical practice in the state. He further added that the SEC had a duty to ensure that all members uphold the Physicians Oath and to set up a mechanism for the review of doctor to doctor relationship as well as doctor- patient relationship.

Dr Enabulele also inducted Clinical students as student members of the NMA and presented them with free stethoscopes as provided by the Dr Aniekeme Uwah led exco.

The event drew a large pool of notable medical doctors across the state who also received Continuing Medical Education on “Tuberculosis activities in Nigeria: Strategies for finding the missing cases” by Dr Michael Jose, W.H.O National professional officer.

While speaking on tuberculosis, Dr Jose revealed that half a million cases were missing in Nigeria and about 14,000 cases missing in Akwa Ibom, noting that the ability to find TB cases in Akwa Ibom State stood at only 17%.

Dr Jose said the infrastructure to identify, detect and diagnose T.B properly needed serious upgrade across the country. He further stated that the W.H.O was advocating for a comprehensive fight against tuberculosis with the acronym F.A.S.T Meaning

Finding TB cases anywhere; Actively and not passively engaging patients ; Safely separating these persons with symptoms; and Treating cases professionally and effectively.

The event was concluded with the commissioning of suggestion boxes, Podium, donation of bed sheets to General hospital, ikot ekpene Local Government and birthday celebration for doctors born between July and September 2016.

Present at the event were permanent secretaries, Past Commissioners of health, Past NMA Chairmen , medical doctors from all hospitals in the state and clinical students from Universities across the region.
