The member representing Etinan, Nsit Ibom and Nsit Ubium Federal Constituency, Barr. Onofiok Luke has reiterated his commitment to modelling how best public service can be offered to the people.

Luke stated this during the opening of a 4-day health intervention programme in collaboration with his predecessor, Hon. Sam Ikon in Nsit Ubium.

The lawmker disclosed that his experience in public service right from his days in service to former Gov. Godswill Akpabio to his current office as the Member representing Etinan Federal Constituency, has always been that which places premium on selfless and impacting service to the people. This, according to him is because he knows and understands exactly what the people expect from public office holders and without mincing words, he’s been able to address the challenges faced by the people because he faced similar challenges growing up, hence he knows where the shoe pinches.

“Let me state here that from my time as Personal Assistant to His Excellency, Chief Godswill Akpabio till date, I’ve always been on the side of the people in a bid to ensure that they feel the impact of public office holders and it is known everywhere that I do my best to positively affect the lives of those that come across me through empowerment and other life touching projects. And let it be known that I’m determined to remain a perfect model of public service” he said.

The health intervention programme according to Luke was captured in the 2019 budget by his predecessor, Elder Samuel Ikon, and, unlike some his fellow first timers, he chose not to scrap it off even when the opportunity arose. This, he said, is due to the fact that he enjoys a cordial relationship, as well as support and cooperation of his predecessor, reason he thought it necessary for the project to go ahead, adding that Ikon had chosen Nsit Ubium to start off the exercise in his honor as the sitting member.

He further briefed constituents on the importance of having a good relationship with predecessors because it is a panacea for development in any given area as those who engage in war of words or blame games only do so out of their selfish desires and their constituents will be the ones suffering the effects.

He further revealed that the Health Project was domiciled in the Federal College of Dental Therapy in Enugu with 30 percent funding released so far, and will not only end with dental care services, but will have collaborations with other health organizations in the state to ensure that surgeries are carried out as well as eye treatment.

Luke who is immediate past Speaker of the House of Assembly in Akwa Ibom also charged constituents to make the most of the intervention programme in Nsit Ubim adding that upon the release of the remaining funds, it will extend to the other two local government areas that make up the Federal Constituency.

In a separate remark, the five star lawmaker aporeciated his constituents for the support they gave him and further stated that he has no regrets adopting a bipartisan approach by endorsing the the sitting Speaker of the House of Representives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, as he will always do it again and again if presented with the opportunity. “Etinan Federal Constituency is enjoying the benefits of that endorsement I did for the Speaker, because without their recognition at plenary, I will not be able to have the platform to ventilate and draw the attention of government to issues affecting you in the federal constituency and the state at large”, he added.

He appealed to them to always pray for the leadership of the House of Representatives, as President Buhari and Gov. Udom Emmanuel, stating that he will not hesitate to support the agenda of the president and governor for as long as they are of benefits to the people of his Federal Constituency and the State at large.

Nigerians have expressed their displeasure over the expulsion a female Babcock University student after her sex tape went viral online on Wednesday.

Many on Twitter and other social media platforms disagree with the school’s decision to expel her from the institution, stating that the school ought to be a place for reformation and building character, while others argue that the act didn’t take place in school, but during vacation.

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel has pledged to continue supporting start-ups and growing businesses in Akwa Ibom state. This was communicated through the Governors Senior Special Assistant on Micro-Finance & Entreprise Development Mr Ime Uwah on Wednesday, 20th November 2019 at the November edition of the Dakkada Networking Experience, a monthly business and networking event organized by the Micro-Finance & Enterprise Development Unit of the Governor’s Office.

Speaking at the event held at the Microfinance and Enterprise Development Centre, Mr Ime Uwah stated that the Governor is committed to promoting entrepreneurship and supporting its development in the State through every available platform such as the Dakkada Networking Experience which he described as a business parley with the drive to help entrepreneurs network, share ideas and collaborate with relevant stakeholders on better and easier ways to conduct their businesses.

Speaking further, the SSA on microfinance and Enterprise development, Mr Ime Uwah stated that the Dakkada Networking Experience is a monthly event and is geared at bringing entrepreneurs together with the focus of networking and building better relationships while encouraging and consolidating on the Dakkada philosophy.

Addressing start-ups and growing business owners present at the event, Uwah disclosed that it became imperative to gather entrepreneurs in an informal setting to network, discuss and tinker of the way forward for their business growth.

“We plan to mobilize entrepreneurs in Akwa Ibom state to live up to expectation and uphold the industrious, enterprising and spirit of hard work which is synonymous with the Akwa Ibom people” He added.

In his remarks, the company secretary, Akwa Savings and Loans Limited, Mr Abasiama Idiong explained that often, entrepreneurs complain bitterly about the difficulty to access credit facilities. Idiong who was the moderator at the event maintained that the meeting will allow both the entrepreneurs and stakeholders to ask and answer relevant questions like why accessing credit is seeming challenging, what facilities are available for start-ups and growing businesses, and what criteria are needed to ease the access.

Reeling out available packages, a representative of Zenith Bank, Mrs Ime-Umanah Kokoette revealed that there are packages for growing businesses in the informal sector, adding that they are presently facilitating and disbursing SME loans for women entrepreneurs. Mrs Kokoette further stressed that on this facility, women need to own more than 50% of the business and that no collateral was required to secure the loans, only BVN and evidence of existing business. This facility covers areas ranging from agriculture, fashion, cosmetology, confectioneries, and hospitality, among others.

Speaking on the effort of the Akwa Ibom State Government to helping entrepreneurs access credit, Mr Monday John, Secretary, Akwa Ibom Microcredit scheme hinted that Governor Udom has contributed a tangible quota to the growth of businesses in the state by facilitating over 17,000 interest-free loans to SMEs from 2015 till date.

John stressed that the Udom Emmanuel administration has not relented efforts in helping entrepreneurs especially market women, technicians and business people from the informal sector. He added that plans are on ground to ensure every entrepreneur that needs credit facility is accommodated in the scheme.

Also speaking, the State Coordinator of SMEDAN, Lucy Ekpenyong said that SMEs in Akwa Ibom state lack the basic education on how to access credit, what package is available and how the packages can be accessed, stressing that most SMEs frustrate the process of getting credit by applying for bogus amounts which automatically robs them of credit assessment.

According to Ekpenyong, “when small business owners who should request for 1 million Naira end up requesting for 5 million instead, definitely the application is going to be turned down because SMEDAN looks critically at the business cash flow, viability and the capacity of the entrepreneur to pay back the loans before approving any loan or grant.”

She further maintained that SMEDAN as close partners with CBN had put up a new system that encourages credible and profitable SMEs funding by eliminating the guarantor’s system, providing a low-interest rate and convenient payment period.

Highlighting the role of the Microfinance and Enterprise Development Center, Coordinator of programmes at the centre, Mr Brian Ekwere revealed that the centre has a responsibility of linking ideas to opportunities, helping startups and growing businesses access credit facilities as well as training them to make informed decisions that translate to business progress.

Ekwere said the center was poised to build a network of young enterprising leaders in Akwa Ibom state through commitment to continuous learning and provision of mentorship, stating that the attendees of this month’s Dakkada Networking Experience were culled from Alumni members of the My Entrepreneurship Goals programme (MEGP) and also members of the Dakkada Multipurpose Cooperative Society.

“In our effort to link ideas to opportunities and assist participants in accessing credit, we have created a credit assistance desk where assistance in areas of business registration, business plan development, cash flow analysis, and other indices that are required to access credit for businesses are being provided at no cost to participants” he added.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command on Friday arrested a retired inspector of Police for assaulting his 6-year-old daughter.

The retired Police Inspector, whose name is yet to be known, resident around the Abak road end (near Ekom Iman junction), Uyo, was taken into custody on Friday after the Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, Akwa Ibom State Branch, received a petition from a concerned citizen of the state (name withheld) over the physical assault the 6 years old girl.

According to Radar News, the CLO then mobilised it members and contacted the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations), ACP Adekimi Ojo, who contacted the deputy commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID, DCP Susan Horsefall.

DCP Horsefall immediately mobilized her men who went with the CLO team to rescue the little child who was locked up inside the house by her father who had left for work. He was later arrested for questioning.

According to the report, the little girl named Edidiong sustained several injuries on her body due to the assault, which has also left her sick and traumatised.

The Art Museum, Booths and the Children’s Park are taking shape ahead of the official opening of highly anticipated Ibom Christmas Village on December 1.

To ensure the Ibom Christmas Village takes off on schedule, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Orman Esin on Sunday inspected the site, located at the Ibibio Unity Museum.

Hon. Orman while inspecting the newly installed water facility, stated that it was necessary to provide uninterrupted water supply to enable the vendors, especially for those in the food business to carry out their daily trade without any challenges.

Other parts of the Christmas Village inspected include the Art Museum, Vendors Booths and the Children’s Park which the contractors are working round the clock while putting finishing touches.

It can be recalled that the Commissioner had earlier given his word, saying that  “it will be a lovely and engaging experience this year for Akwa Ibom people and there is no point considering travelling outside the State for the celebrations.”

The Christmas Village is part of the activities for the Ibom Christmas Celebrations, a series of activities and events to celebrate the Christmas season uniquely this year in Akwa Ibom State.

Fun lovers in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital are about to witness some high level and exceptional entertainment this December at the forthcoming ‘Fusion’ concert themed: “The Fifth Element’’.

Fusion, as the name implies is an all-inclusive show, which brings together the best in music, poetry, comedy and dance on one stage to produce a superb entertainment experience for attendees. It is dubbed the biggest youth-friendly Event in Akwa Ibom State and this year’s edition is

Basking on the euphoria and history of being a sold-out Entertainment event in the last three years, this year’s edition returns with lots of exciting activities billed for the show.

The lead Organizer, Folarin Ade-ojo hinted that this year’s edition of Fusion show will be fun-filled, entertaining and an upgrade from the previous edition.

Acts to thrill attendees include Supersonic Blaze, Lexa Udo, Ogiver, Nayme Harvey, Sagas, Lainz and Dreambig. Others include Blaqtymes, Razi Jones, Yung 12 and Sketch. They will be performing live alongside the Fusion band. Comedians on the bill are Jesta, Prof Jai, Mc Holly and Paul Idiong, while Kanzy Smith, Sele, Gabby Rhymes and Afro6ix Jaara will deliver punchlines and deep thoughts with Spoken-word Poetry

Fusion will be held at the prestigious Emerald Event Center, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State hold on 6th December 2019. Red Carpet starts at 6 pm, Main show will begin at 8 pm and the after-party by 1 am till dawn.

Nigeria’s comedian Ayo Makun popularly known as AY and his lovely wife, Mabel are celebrating their eleventh wedding anniversary today, Friday, November 29, 2019.

The Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, on Monday, said as Head of the legislature, he is committed to serving the people and not in for self-aggrandisement.

The Speaker stated this when he received stakeholders from Uruan Local Government Area in his office at the Assembly Complex.

“When you see people seeking for positions and they make it a do or die affair, check very well, he is not going to serve the people, but for self aggrandisement. I was want I am for service, not for self aggrandisement.

“Most people are happy, but because Aniekan Bassey is the Speaker, but because an Uruan Man is the Speaker. An Uruan man brings unity and development. I believe that God has set me aside to promote peace and justice in Uruan LGA and Akwa Ibom State”, he said.

While thanking the Elders for their support since his emergence as the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey hinted that he will host a Town Hall Meeting before the year runs out and revealed that the event is aimed at identifying problems faced by his constituents.

Speaker Bassey said he remains committed to ensuring peace and unity among his constituents, and appealed for cooperation from the stakeholders to enable him succeed in his assignment.

“I am so humbled and elated today. Let me specifically thank you for this visit. I have heard all you have said, there is nothing I need now than good advice and with good advice, we will move Uruan and Akwa Ibom State forward”, he said.

He said the 7th Assembly, aside from making people-oriented laws, is committed to developing rural communities across the state.

“As lawmakers, we have agreed to return to our various communities to know what issues our people are facing, so we can address them.
Personally, I will have a Town Hall meeting, where we will meet with the four zones in Uruan. There is peace in the 7th Assembly and the people are happy”, he stressed.

“God knows why he kept me. I keep on saying that I wasn’t better than those who sought for the same office, but your prayers saw me through. Since I assumed office as the Speaker, I have had great support.

Earlier, the Political Leader of Uruan LGA and Uyo Senatorial District, Obong Peter Atakpo, lauded members of the 7th Assembly for choosing their son as Speaker and expressed hope that Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey will attract development to the area, using his good office.

On his part, a former lawmaker from the area, Rt. Hon. Usenobong Akpabio, thanked God for the emergence of Rt. Hon. Bassey as Speaker of the State Assembly and urged the number three citizen to see his new office as a unifying factor in Uruan LGA.

Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Roads and other Infrastructure Maintenance Agency, Prince Godwin Ntukude, urged the Speaker to carry the four zones of Uruan along in the scheme of things and also ensure wide consultations in his decision making process.

Also, Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Board of Internal Revenue Service, Mr Okon Okon, commended the Speaker for hitting the ground running on assumption of office.

Other speakers, including the
Political Leader of Central Uruan, Engr. James Effiong, Political Leader of Northern Uruan, Engr. Offiong Akpabio, State Woman Leader of PDP, Mrs Meme Akpabio, among others, all congratulated the Speaker on his new office and prayed for his success.
