Militants Invade Akwa Ibom State, Strips market Women Unclad

Suspected militants and pirates, last week, in Akwa Ibom State, abducted several market women, whisked them to their hideouts in the brooks, where they forced them at gunpoint to take their clothes off, defiled and took several pictures of their womanhood with their phones.
NDV learned that the women from different communities in the state and neighboring Cross River State were returning from Nwaniba community market in Uruan local government of the state when over 10 masked men ambushed the two speedboats separately conveying them, commandeered them to their camp.

They dispossessed them of their money and other valuables in their hideout before humiliating them.
Reports has it that the women were heartlessly beaten and sexually abused by the goons, who inflicted machete cuts on the women that refused to yield to their immoderate sexual desire.

They removed the outboard engines of the two speedboats that carried the women and fled their camp, leaving them behind.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Chukwu Ikechukwu, said: Failure of the community to file the matter with the Police in the area was hampering investigation and action on the problem.” He, therefore, advised the public to always volunteer information on crimes and criminal elements to security agencies for prompt action.
The Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in-charge of the area, Superintendent of Police (SP), Sunday Effiong, described the incident as pathetic, also said that it had not been reported to the Police.
One of the victims, Mrs. Christiana Sunday John, who spoke through an interpreter, lamented amid tears: “We were badly treated, our womanhood was abused. I joined the second speed boat going back home when midway into our journey; another speed boat from nowhere blocked us.
”To my greatest surprise, the boat was conveying over 10 hefty masked men, two of the armed masked men jumped into our boat and ordered the boat operator to take to one of their camps in the creeks.

The two armed men robbed the twenty five (25) of us on board the speed boat before we got to their destination.
“At the camp, they forced us to pull-off, we were forced to pull everything to the pant and they asked at gunpoint to expose our private parts while they took several shots with their camera phones,” she asserted.
Mrs. John further disclosed: “After the dehumanizing experience, they left us. Most of the women, who initially proved stubborn, went home with machete cuts. Two boats loaded with women returning from Nwaniba Market were attacked.
After their evil operation, they removed the boat engines, living us stranded in their camp. They collected N70,000, which was all I had on me, now I do not know how to start all over again.”
Chairman, Nwaniba Village Council, Elder Samuel Joe, who confirmed the incident to NDV, said the saddest thing was that mothers and wives of our men were forced to dance nude while they were being filmed, adding that:

“This is the most embarrassing criminal operation in Nwaniba. We built that market with community effort, now militants have closed down the market.
No customer would want to come here and risk his or her life. The market was built two years ago, now we cannot generate revenue because of the effect of militancy and pirates who are terrorizing the area on a daily basis,” he stated.
Elder Joe said militants and pirates were operating freely in the area, pointing out that on June 27, they killed many persons and razed about four villages, including Edile Ikpa, Ufak-Effiong, Akpa-Mfurukim and Akara Obio Uruan.

According to him, fishing gears, outboard engines, boats, cash and other valuables, were carted away by the invaders from neighboring Creek Town, Ikot Offiong and Ikoneto in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Speaking on the matter, chairman, Uruan local government, Dr. Edwin Okon, complained: “My people in the fishing communities have suffered untold hardship in the hands of militants, who always cross into Akwa Ibom through the waterways.
“We have lost countless numbers of people to these militants and we want government and other agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to come to the aid of the displaced people”, he concluded.

Abel Damina

Pastor and founder of Power City International, Abel Damina has faulted the act of paying tithes in churches.

The cleric said the belief in some quarters that God would not bless anyone that does not pay tithe was a lie.

In a series of teachings, Abel Damina mentioned that giving was not done to be blessed but out of blessing.

In a video posted on instagram, Damina further stated that an act of encouraging church members to give for multiplying effects from God is a fraud and an insult to the works of redemption and grace.

6 Funny Misconceptions about Hausa People

$

Hausa

The Hausa ethnic group is one of the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria and is one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa. The bulk of the Hausa people are based in northern Nigeria, though there are a few in parts of Southern Nigeria. The Hausas are largely pastoral and ‘agrocentric’; this is why they are the largest suppliers of food to the nation. Over time, some funny misconceptions have been formed about the Hausa people and Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 6 of them.

Every One from the North is Hausa

This is like saying everyone from the South is Yoruba. There are other ethnic groups in the North apart from the Hausa, though the Hausas are one of the predominant ethnic groups. Aside the Hausa ethnic group, the Fulani ethnic group also reside in the North along with some other smaller ethnic groups.

All Hausas are Muslims

Most Hausa people are muslims, but not all of them are. There are some Hausa christians residing right there in the North, with some of them as pastors leading congregations of other Hausa christians.

Hausas are Violent

The religious fanatics amongst them are the heartless and violent ones, not the actual people of the tribe. The Hausa people are actually a friendly, warm and accommodating people. If you’re doubtful, as anyone who’s lived in their towns and let them tell you about just how nice to strangers they can be.

They are Not Money Conscious

This is funny because there is hardly a human being alive who isn’t money conscious. What you can say about Hausas is that it typically doesn’t take them having a lot of money to be content; they tend to be content with whatever money they are able to make. This doesn’t mean there are not money conscious, it just means they have a modest financial culture.

They Can Never Cheat Anyone

Cheating or not cheating a person is not dependent on ethnic group, it is dependent on a person’s character and personality. There are some Hausas that cheat people during business transactions, but that is because they are human beings, it has little or nothing to do with their ethnic group.

Hausa People are Dull

It is important to not underestimate the fact that the richest man in Africa is an Hausa man. A lot of people say Hausa people are dull, that they behave like cows and that is why it is easy to manipulate them into religious fanaticism, but you will be surprised at just how smart a Hausa man or woman can be. Being smart does not depend on your ethnic group, it depends on the individual.

Nigeria to control the use of social media

The National Council on Information (NCI) has recommended the setting up of a Council to regulate the use of social media in Nigeria.

The recommendation is contained in a statement issued at the end of Extraordinary Meeting of NCI on Hate Speeches, Fake News and National Unity held on Friday in Jos.

In the statement made available to newsmen on Sunday, the Council recommended the use of severe measures in checking conventional media and their programmes.

The Council presided over by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, noted that Social media has no address, and as such inspecting and editing posting in social media might be difficult.

The Council recommended that Information managers at the state level should open a website to counter report of any misinformation posted by the social media as quickly as the hate speeches, misinformation and fake news are posted.

It recommended immediate killing of whatever postings on social media assumed or presumed to be hate speeches or fake news or misinformation by the information managers in various states.

The Council noted that social media might take over the 2019 elections because Nigerians had come to rely more and believe the social media over the conventional media.

The Council also directed the Federal and State Ministries of Information to use jingles to promote peace and come up with cartoons on the TV and Newspapers telling the dangers of fake news and hate speeches.

“The collaboration must start with National Orientation Agency and the state governments,” the Council recommended.

The Council underscored the need to start talking to those responsible for law and enforcement of justice to address the issues of citizens taking laws into their hands.

The body also emphasized that “the welfare of the people is paramount, people well fed will listen to their government”.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a keynote address, expressed displeasure over the hate spewed on radio stations across the country which according to him has become alarming.

The Minister said that the careless incitement to violence and the level of insensitivity to the multi-religious, multi-ethnic nature of the country must not be allowed to continue because it is detrimental to the unity and well-being of our country.

The NCI is the highest policy making body for information articulation and delivery in the country.

Delegates to the Council included Heads of Parastatal Agencies in the Federal Ministry of Information and Commissioners for Information in the 36 States.

International Student Visa Application

Over time studying abroad has actually become more accessible to students in a number of countries. You only need to do your research well enough to reveal these countries with good tertiary institutions and relatively easy visa procedures for international students, and take advantage of their offers. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 4 countries with the easiest visa procedures for international students.

Canada

Canada is considered as one of the top study destinations in the world because of its great universities, reasonable cost of living and beautiful environment and landscape. The country has quite an easy procedure for students to apply for study visas. The process basically requires the student to first apply for and gain entry into a Canadian university and then obtain a Canadian study permit, which is renewable for the length of the students study period. The best part of a Canadian study visa is that, not only can an individual study as an international student, he/she can also work as a student, obtain a post-graduation work permit, gain Canadian work experience and learn about pathways towards Canadian citizenship. Also, another great perk is that you can bring family members with you! You can learn more about studying in Canada by visiting the Canadian Immigration and Citizenship website.

Germany

What is better than a country that has abolished tuition and fees at public universities? Nothing! Germany is such a country and another great place for international students to consider. Aside having an easy visa procedure for international students, it has a reasonable cost of living and some of the world’s finest universities. Basically, the process of getting a German study visa is to first gain admission into a German University, then complete a visa application and attend an interview. A positive outcome sees you obtaining a German study visa that allows you to study and work in the country. In addition, if you want to go to Germany just learn their language, you can obtain a language-study visa that lasts for a good two years and be on your way to learning the awesome language.

New Zealand

This is another country with an easy visa procedure for international students. Basically, you start by checking out the types of study visas the country offers and then begin your application process. You can also contact the program or university that accepted you and ask for their help in your visa application process; they can provide you with valuable information.

Ireland

This country has such an easy visa procedure for international students that it can all be done online. Surprising right? Of course, you will need proof of your acceptance to a program of study and then the required paperwork. You can also contact the international students’ services office of the institution for assistance with the process, if you need it. An Irish study visa also gives you access to part-time employment depending on your program’s eligibility.

Jay Z and Beyonce

Having twin children comes with a lot of excitement, but has also got its own challenges. This is the case with billionaire couple, Jay-Z and Beyonce Carter who welcomed twins Rumi and Sir in mid-June.

In order for Jay and Bey to manage between their work and the family, they have hired nannies to help take care of the new born babies according to a report from OK! Magazine.  It also adds that the Carters will pay the hired nannies $100,000 a year each.

‘The twins don’t sleep at the same time, so she decided she needed three per child, working in eight hour shifts,’ a source close to the family said.

There are also two nannies for their daughter Blue Ivy, aged five which makes a total of eight nannies taking care of the Carter kids.

Primary Healthcare Agency Law: The Benefits for Akwa Ibom Masses

$
0
0

By Eshiet Akpanumoh

Primary health care was declared the model for global health policy at a 1978 meeting of health ministers and experts from around the world. Primary health care requires a change in socioeconomic status, distribution of resources, a focus on health system development, and emphasis on basic health services. Considered too idealistic and expensive, it was replaced with a disease-focused, selective model. After several years of investment in vertical interventions, preventable diseases remain a major challenge for developing countries. The selective model has not responded adequately to the interrelationship between health and socioeconomic development, and a rethinking of global health policy is urgently needed.

According to the Resolution 29 taken by the National Council on Health (NCH) during its 54th Meeting in May 2011, it was noted that, “the thrust of the National Health Bill in strengthening Primary Health Care (PHC) through the creation of PHC Boards/Agencies and the PHC Development Fund”. The Council at the meeting also noted efforts in “Bringing PHC under One Roof” in line with the provisions of the National Health Bill, as well as the importance of enacting relevant State legislation and regulations that will facilitate the implementation of National Health Bill. The Council therefore approved the Implementation Guide on Bringing PHC under One Roof (PHCUOR) as a working document to be used by the three tiers of government and approved that all states establish Primary Health Care Boards.

This resolution was prompted by the realized need to strengthen healthcare delivery system in the country in line with the Universal Health Coverage sometimes referred to as Universal Health Care, Universal Coverage, or Universal Care, defined as a health care system that provides health care and financial protection to all citizens of a particular country. The Universal Health Coverage is organized around providing a specified package of benefits to all members of a society with the end goal of providing financial risk protection, improved access to health services, and improved health outcomes. Universal health care is not one-size-fits-all and does not imply coverage for all people for everything.

Introduced since 2004 initially as the PHCUOR Concept, this has been implemented in several states with sustained success recorded in some like Jigawa (under Gunduma Health Board), Rivers (under Primary Healthcare Mgt Board- PHCMB), while Lagos and Kano have theirs (under Primary Health Care Development Agency- SPHCDA). Records also has it that all states in the Niger Delta had before now made striking progress with this concept of healthcare development; and with the recently passed bill for a law to provide for the establishment of the Akwa Ibom State Primary Health Care Development Agency by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, the state has taken the last spot in the queue.

As described by the World Health Organization, the Universal Health Coverage is a situation where citizens can access health services without incurring financial hardship. This health policy framework is of central importance. It can be determined through three critical dimensions: WHO IS COVERED, WHAT SERVICES ARE COVERED, AND HOW MUCH OF THE COST IS COVERED. Thus, in the development of universal health systems, it is appropriate to recognize “healthy public policy” (Health in All Policies) as the overarching policy framework, with public health, primary health care, and community services as the cross-cutting framework for all health and health-related services operating across the spectrum from primary prevention to long term care and end-stage conditions. Although that perspective is both logical and well-grounded in the social ecological model, the reality is different in most settings, and there is room for improvement everywhere.

With the three dimensions aforementioned, this concept targets the accessibility and affordance of healthcare services, with critical consideration on rural settlers and low-income earners. This is so because the consequences of an ineffective healthcare delivery system are more telling on these ones who are forced to deal with the problems of non-availability of primary healthcare facilities and inability to afford the higher ones common in the urban areas. However, even when the latter is less a problem, the need for the former cannot be undermined as it is the most commonly reached for the rural settlers. This also provides for strong referral linkages where people with complicated ailment can have proper referrals to specialist hospitals for medical solution.

Research has shown that developing countries face a number of challenges in providing effective health care for their populations. Due to the challenge of limited money to fund health care, large sections of their population may be difficult to reach. This is because they may live in rural areas where roads and other access means may be poor or the physical landscape may be difficult to cross. Therefore, providing basic primary health care in local settings is a way to meet some of these challenges.

Undoubtedly, it was against the backdrop of this reality that the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly saw the need to set the stage, through the Speaker Onofiok Luke sponsored HealthCare Bill, for the state government to provide solutions to the issue of loosely binding healthcare delivery policies, provide reliable records to aid effective planning and implementation of healthcare activities in the state, and enable capacity development and improved healthcare delivery skills through training and re-training of its providers, as well as create a linking working network amongst the stakeholders in all sectors.

In addition, the state government now has the stage set for solutions to the issue of ill-funding and improper maintenance of health facilities in the state. Both ill-funding and improper maintenance play contributory roles against proper healthcare delivery in the state. Primary healthcare centres are far less funded with equipments and drugs which are indispensable to medical care. Here, the law aims at providing permanent solutions to this by proposing an agency that will take over, as part of its primary responsibilities, the duty of overseeing the running of all primary healthcare facilities located in the state including making provisions for, and maintaining all infrastructures and equipments and as well, employ and discipline staff of the facilities under its direct supervision. The last shall check the issue of callous and irresponsible attitude to duty.

An effective running of the agency proposed by this law will have direct bearing on the Akwa Ibom masses through increased health care and improved life expectancy for all. It will guarantee basic health care for the people even when budget and manpower is limited. This concept keeps training costs at very low rates. In India for instance, training cost for a health worker stands at $150 per year. Under this concept, the health workers are locally known, respected, accepted and trusted. Also, the Universal Health Coverage suggested Self-help Schemes, if adopted by the state government through the proposed agency, will allow local communities to look after themselves, improving their confidence. And in implementing the Self-help Schemes, emphasis is laid on prevention during sensitization and awareness creation, as the belief is that preventing sickness in the first place saves the government money on health care provision costs.

Research has also shown that countries with a healthier population are wealthier as the people are more productive. According to a WHO report, attempts have been made by many countries using the Universal Health Coverage model to establish a development of local clinics to work together to prevent and treat disease. On the whole, it is established that a focused aid on primary health care is very effective, much more so than building large hospitals which will only deal with limited cases.

Finally, in all considerations, let the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly be given this commendation for setting the pace for a harmonized Primary Healthcare sub-system in order to overcome the current chaotic approach to healthcare delivery, structural constraints and improve coordination. This singular act of legislation, if fully implemented, will go as far as establishing a unitary, integrated and decentralised management structure and sub-systems; preposition the states for a successful implementation of the National Health Act, as well as achieve effective service delivery for improved health outcomes. While hoping and praying that the state governor gives accent to the law and subsequently make speedy move to set the agency running, it gives a high sense of satisfaction knowing that provisions for this very important health need have been taken thus far.

7 Things You Should do Every day Before You Start Your Car

A car is just like our body. We do not really care about it until we have a headache or something happens. That is when we remember the doctor or hospital. This is not supposed to be the case but many of us do it. Perhaps we are scared of hospitals. It is the same with our cars. Some people just jump in their cars without checking or doing anything and zoom off. This is very risky. It is better to take precautions before you start your car so as to avoid stories that touch. Accordingly, we share the things you must check in your car before you turn on the ignition.

Check the Brakes

Before you set out on your journey, make sure to check the brakes and see if they have the needed stopping power. If you feel the brakes are not effective enough, head immediately to your mechanic or add more brake oil.

Check Your Tyres

Tyres are a very important car accessory. Never joke with it because you do not want it bursting while driving. Hence, check if you have a flat tyre and also make sure that it contains the required pressure. Importantly, always carry a spare.

Your Fluids Level

You don’t need to check the fluid levels on a daily basis but do so once every 15 days or at least on a monthly basis. Some of the fluids include engine oil, brake oil, power steering oil. Do not forget the water level.

Adjust the Rear View Mirrors

Adjust the rear view mirrors to the point you would be able to see a small portion of the rear end of your car along with the lane next to it on your outside rear view mirrors (ORVM).

Adjust Your Seat

You should do this frequently if you are not the only driver. As a rule, do not commence your journey unless you are comfortable in the driver’s seat. You should be able to reach up to the pedals without having to stretch your legs.

Fasten Your Seatbelt

If your car has a reminder to fasten your seat-belt, it is good. But if it does not, make a habit. In fact, today you may be risking arrest in Lagos if you fail to fasten or use your seatbelt.

Check the Gears

Do a check to see if the gears are working properly to know if they are getting stuck or jamming up. This could mean it needs servicing. Don’t forget to put the gear back in neutral before starting the car.

A week old baby boy in India survived several hours in a grave after being buried alive by his teenaged rape victim mother.

The 16-year-old mother buried the boy in a graveyard in an attempt “to get rid of him” a few days after secretly giving birth at her parents’ house in Barwani district.

Cries were heard by villagers which produced the miracle rescue of the infant now recovering in hospital in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

Children who were playing nearby reported hearing muffled cries and raised the alarm. The baby was found under about 10 inches (25 centimeters) of mud.

The identities of the mother and child are being kept secret.

The infant had been bitten by insects and was suffering from cold but is getting better now and would be transferred to a state children’s home.

Barwani police chief Prashant Khare told AFP “The victim decided to get rid of the child and buried him in a pit near her parents’ home.”

The girl’s parents had forced her to marry in an attempt to cover up the assault but her husband refused to accept the child.

The teenage mother has returned to her in-laws home in the neighboring Maharashtra state.

Police said the mother could face attempted manslaughter charges.

The girl claimed she conceived after being sexually assaulted by a local teenager. A 17-year-old youth was arrested on rape charges on Thursday.

Any sex with a person aged below 18 is considered rape in India.

Sexual assaults in rural India are often concealed because of the social stigma. Women are often blamed in the aftermath of sex crimes.

India has a grim record of sexual assaults on minors with 20,000 cases of rape or sexual assault reported in 2015, according to government data.

Jay-Z and Kanye West back when the going was good

A new documentary is coming to the U.K television titled ‘Public Enemies: Jay-Z vs. Kanye West’ will highlight the strained relationship between the the Throne duo.

The documentary is set to premiere Monday on Channel 4 in the U.K., Public Enemies promises to provide “unseen footage and exclusive interviews.” In addition, the documentary will reveal “the story behind JAY-Z and Kanye West’s spectacular rise, their creative partnership and their colossal falling out.”

A 41-second trailer for Public Enemies was released on Wednesday (July 26). The intro features West’s epic diatribe aimed at JAY-Z during his Life of Pablo Tour. “JAY-Z: Call me, bro. You still ain’t called me,” West says in the unforgettable clip. The release of the forthcoming documentary comes at an interesting time, considering tensions between both parties seemingly remain high.

Last month, JAY-Z released his album 4:44 and threw a flurry of jabs at West. Then, rumors flooded the Internet regarding Yeezy’s displeasure with TIDAL and him severing ties with the streaming service. Earlier this month, 2 Chainz said in an interview with DJ Drama that the bond between ‘Ye and Hov is still strong.

2 Chains had this to say during the interview: “For the most part, [Kanye] was like, ‘We still brothers,’ and stuff like that,” Chainz said. “He had a couple of things that was probably personal that he’d want me to keep, but we talked about the music climate right now.”

This has been my desire, aspiration and wishes to see every Akwa Ibom son successful, if I have my ways I will take a very talented, creative and hardworking singer in Akwa Ibom to the top because the world is waiting for us.

My focus point as the State Chairman of the organization in the next two year is to dialogue with necessary bodies in position to help and support, most importantly investors in the kingdom business and reasonable individual who will partner to showcase the gospel artiste to the world.

I believe in education and it’s my priority to involve in programs that will properly educate the singers and enlighten them to the full knowledge of their career.

Information, publicity and strategic planning is the key in the present day music business and i have expanded my plans and contacts to bring in first class publicity expert that will help give the home based singers a national face and exposure. FOGMMON is spread across the 36 states of the federation with branches around the world and we have unique publicity plans that will help all of its members in spreading their content.

One of the most challenges the gospel singers are facing is in marketing but with the plans on ground I can assure you that will never be a problem anymore because I have started talking with top marketers in the state and in the country, distributors and promoters who are willing to work us. Presently I am working with top online music stores around the country for a project that will be soon be unveiled to Akwa Ibom people.

In a short note my target within the two years ahead includes, Active campaign to promote the gospel music in the state, artiste welfare, training and workshops, organizing world class event to give every member a platform to express their talent to the world. I plan to work with the leadership of CAN, PFN, the Government and to be law abiding. Within my time in office I hope to set up a standard choir group for FOGMMON that will compete with any singing group in the country, etc.

I will organize pastors and music ministers’ conference to help bring unity and understanding between the both parties, focusing on respect, welfare, sanity and unity. The FOGMMON Monthly congress is not to be compromise by any means, as every agenda of the fellowship shall be followed through to accomplishment by God’s grace and guidance.

The instrumentalist, producers, choristers, directors, songwriters, backup singers and sound engineers shall equally benefit as there are great plans for them. The issues of instrumentalist, backups and producers been treated as second class artiste shall be history with quality orientation, engagement and management planning.

8 Sure Causes of Business Failure

failed buisness

With the trending economic situation, many businesses have failed. Regardless, many of the causes of business failure can be prevented. These causes shared by Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency will help you put together a plan to make sure your business is around for decades.

Lack of Experience

Lack of experience is one of the causes of business failure. If you are inexperienced or your management is made up of novices, then your business is likely to fail. When starting a new business, it is advised you get the services of people experienced in that field.

No Accountability

Some people throw accountability into the dustbin because they own the business, hence, there is no difference between their personal money and business money. They simply spend. You must be accountable for any kobo your business spend and makes.

Poor Location

You cannot start a business where the service is not needed. Making it classy will not make people patronise you. A good market survey is required before a business location is chosen.

Failure to Understand Your Market and Customers

It’s important that you understand your market and customers buying habits. Answering questions about who your customers are and how much they are willing to spend.

Overdependence on a Single Customer

If your biggest customer walked out the door and never returned, your organisation or business may be done for. Hence, do not rely on a single customer. Try as much as possible to diversify your customer base.

Copying Others

What worked for Mr A may not work for Mr B. Many people have gone into business or made a business choice because they see others doing it and think they can be successful in it if they try. It is good you add your own idea after proper consultation, which will make you different.

Quitting Too Soon

Giving up too early is the biggest reason why many businesses fail. If you do not persist, research, fail and try and try again, you might not be successful in business.

Inadequate Financing

A business will definitely fail if there is no cash flow. Your business needs a steady cash flow to take it through its day to day running.
